Sony unveils Crystal LED screens for virtual production

The exhibitions were developed by Sony Electronics in collaboration with Sony Pictures Entertainment, with a view to production uses.

Just ahead of next week’s virtual CES, Sony Electronics has announced a number of new Crystal LED modular live display exhibits aimed at professional applications, including virtual production – an area that has seen an increase in interest over the past year and which used on projects of The Midnight Sky on The Mandalorian.

Sony draws attention to the C-Series for its high contrast ratio and the B-Series to emphasize the brightness. Sony reports that the B-series was developed in collaboration with Sony Pictures Entertainment to reflect the needs of the production. It contains, for example, an anti-reflection layer with a matte finish, with a view to virtual sets.

Both series are equipped with Sony’s “X1 for Crystal LED” processor and feature the same Crystal LED technology used in Bravia TVs. Features include the ability to display images with a high dynamic range, high frames up to 120 frames per second and stereoscopic 3D. They are also fanless for quieter operation.

A virtual production environment utilizing the technology giant’s current display technology (initially introduced for additional uses, including digital cinemas) can be found at Sony’s Digital Media Production Center, a filmmaking company in LA. The set-up was at the Sony show at CES 2020 a year ago.

The new Crystal LED C-Series and B-Series are expected to be available this summer. Prices have not been announced.
