Sony throws every PS4 model off one kind of smart in Japan

You can now only get the 500 GB Jet Black

It’s starting!

As with all good hardware cleaning, Sony starts with Japan. It happened to the Vita, and now it’s going to happen to the PS4.

As reported by Game Watch, Sony Interactive Entertainment Japan Asia will phase out all PS4 Pro models and all but one PS4 Slim model. In short, the only PS4 that will be actively sold by Sony in Japan is the PS4 smart 500 GB Jet Black model. As Gematsu points out, the “OG” PS4 has already been discontinued.

While the PS4 had a fantastic run, counting and counting 113.5 million units (which placed it squarely in the top five best-selling console list of all time right above the original PlayStation), Sony is obviously looking to the future here.

There are many hardware considerations, such as the shelf space for physical retailers, as well as manufacturing issues and overhead. Sony needs to meet the PS5 demand and get hardware in the hands of everyone they can; and moves out of an era of PS5 “lotteries” and chaos. For Sony, this is the beginning of a new era. For PlayStation fans and collectors, this is the end of one.
