Sony is expected to launch PS5 SSD expansion this summer

According to a Bloomberg report, Sony will be using extended SSD storage this summer. The feature apparently comes in a firmware update that will activate the M.2 expansion slot of PS5, which is currently disabled. Sony tells The edge Prior to the PS5 launch, the feature was ‘reserved for a future update’.

According to Bloomberg’s sources, the firmware update will increase the speed of the PS5’s cooling fans. The PS5 has an extraordinarily fast built-in SSD, and any compatible third party needs to be just as fast to store and run PS5 games; it’s going to generate extra heat.

The PS5 is currently powered by an 825 GB SSD, which leaves users only 667 GB of usable space once formatted. As game sizes continue to increase, you do not fit the latest content Call of Duty on a 500 GB PS4, for example – PS5 owners will welcome the possibility of upgrades for storage. As long as the fan noise is not too loud, it is.
