Sony FX3 film camera licks 4K 120p video in a compact body

Sony may soon release the FX3, a version of the cinema camera of the A7S III mirrorless camera, according to several leaks. It has a 12-megapixel sensor, 4K 120 fps video and a price tag of € 3,795, which can fall below $ 4,000 based on Sony’s usual European and US prices. Images come from a productive Japanese camera sweetheart Nokoshita and Twitter user Joe Lawry, while the specifications were reported by YouTuber Gaston Shutters.

The FX3 presumably has similar specifications for the A7S III, including 4K / 120 fps video (no 8K), dual CFexpress card slots, body stabilization and a still photo mode. However, the body does not have a center hump, so it looks more like the A7C, albeit with a larger handle and joystick (above). It looks like it has a fold-out screen, but presumably lacks the ND filter found in other Sony Cinema Line cameras.

The three standard tripod screws and the large recording button at the top show that the FX3 is designed to take accessories such as monitors, microphones, etc. needed by video shooters. If the leak is accurate, which certainly turns out to be the case, it would be by far Sony’s smallest Cinema Line camera.

The FX3 is no different from the C70, which is Canon’s first film camera with an RF holder, because both are video-specific cameras with speckle shapes. However, the FX3 has a full-frame rather than a super-35 (APS-C) sensor and is significantly cheaper and smaller due to its appearance. It will presumably arrive around February 23 for the CP + camera show that will be held entirely online this year.
