Some Republicans in Utah are hoping to condemn Senator Mitt Romney for voting to condemn former President Donald Trump in his second indictment.

The motion, which is circulating on social media, says Romney could not ‘represent the average conservative Republican voter in Utah’ and ‘misrepresented himself as a Republican’ when he ran for office.

It is unclear whether the motion of censure will be taken up by the Republican Party in Utah and how many people have signed up so far.

The draft goes on to say that Romney embarrassed the state of Utah when he was the only Republican senator who voted to convict Trump during his first indictment. Romney voted to remove Trump because he abused his power by pressuring Ukraine to investigate then-Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden.

The censorship also falls on Romney because he opposed the attempt to declare Trump’s second indictment unconstitutional because Trump was no longer in office, and that he voted in favor of calling witnesses. It further aggravates Romney because he joined six other Republicans on Saturday to convict Trump. It takes two-thirds of the senators to remove a president, and Trump has therefore been acquitted. Mike Lee in Utah was among Republicans to vote for acquittal.

The census motion concludes that Romney used his ‘senatorial power and influence to undermine Trump, claiming that’ Romney is apparently an agent for the Establishment Deep State. ‘

Evan McMullin, a former Republican who elected him as independent president in 2016, said he was stunned by the backlash against Romney from members of his own party.

Mitt has done more to defend the Constitution than any Congressman in modern history. “He serves the country and does more than anyone else to defend freedom,” McMullin said. “We have to stand by him.”

McMullin, a regular critic of Trump during his tenure, said Romney’s courage should be celebrated and not condemned.

“There’s a huge need and opportunity for Utah to lead on this. There are a lot of good Republicans in Utah who are committed to the fundamentals of our country, the same leadership that Mitt is offering at the moment, “McMullin said.” It’s not about Republicans, Democrats or Independents. to put the Constitution first. ”

Derek Brown, chairman of Utop GOP, says he is aware of the motion of no confidence, but has not seen it yet.

“I said the best census would take place at the ballot box,” Brown said, referring to 2024, when Romney would be re-elected.

In 2020, Romney was the first U.S. senator in history to vote to remove a president of his own party from office during Trump’s first indictment. Following this vote, the Central Committee of the Republican Party in Utah considered several proposals to punish Romney. Instead, the group adopted a watered-down resolution praising Trump.

“There was not enough support a year ago to condemn Senator Romney,” Brown said. “The impact of these resolutions was minimal.”

The GOP Central Committee of Utah will only meet again in June and Brown says he has more important issues to tackle as party chairman.

“My focus is to retain the people who have joined the Utah Republican Party over the past year and reach out to those who have left the party to bring them back,” he said.

The setback against Romney’s vote of some element in the Utah GOP is not limited to censorship. Some have filed an online petition asking Romney to resign following the first indictment last year, and it bubbled up again over the weekend.

Longtime GOP activist Janalee Tobias pushed out the old petition on Sunday, where it quickly gained traction in some social media corners.

“This is the second time he (Romney) has betrayed the people of Utah,” Tobias said in a telephone interview Monday. “We assumed he would be a loyal supporter of President Trump since he was a Republican presidential candidate.”

According to FiveThirtyEight analysis, Romney voted with Trump’s agenda almost 80% of the time. Despite the degree of support, Romney’s 20% apostasy is too much for Tobias.

‘Utah is a red state. “We chose Mitt Romney to be part of the red team,” she said. “Trump is the back player of the red team. Romney decided to play for the blue team, and he should resign. ”

The Republican Party in Utah on Monday issued a statement on the accusation, pointing out that both Romney and Lee were criticized. ‘The differences between our own Republicans in Utah show a diversity of thinking, as opposed to the danger of a party determining’ unanimity of thought ‘. There is power in our differences as a political party, and we look forward to every senator casting his votes to the people of Utah. ”

Seven Republican senators joined all 50 Democrats on Saturday in condemning Trump for inciting the crowd that attacked the U.S. Capitol on January 6 in an attempted uprising. Two of the Republicans were formally reprimanded. Louis Cassidy, GOP, on Saturday condemned Bill Cassidy, and several Republican parties in Pennsylvania punished Sen. Patrick Toomey. North Carolina, Richard Burr, is marked off from his state party on Monday.
