Some Apple AirPods Max owners find condensation in the earbuds of the headphones, according to some reports on Twitter.
An Apple AirPods Max owner shared photos of the potentially worrying issue, which clearly show water droplets in the earbuds. They claim that the condensation problem ‘detects problems with the ears’ and that the headphones have never been worn in a humid environment.
The tweet led to a handful of other users coming forward to report that they experienced exactly the same condensation issue while using the Apple AirPods Max, albeit in different usage scenarios.
Had exactly the same problem, with a light walk (40 minutes) and then again while watching a movie (1:30). Decided to send them back after seeing that the water also enters the driver and that the ring turns red (or I think it’s too much). Anyway too worrying for me29 December 2020
Although it is difficult to see if the problem is widespread, condensation usually occurs when hot air hits a cold surface. The Apple AirPods Max are made predominantly of metal, and the earbuds often feel cold. It is therefore possible that condensation may occur here and not its plastic-coated competitors, such as the Sony WH-1000XM4 headphones.
It remains to be seen whether more reports of condensation will appear now that Apple’s headphones are available worldwide and are likely to experience more weather conditions and scenarios for use. The good news is that we did not experience the problem ourselves during the time with the high-end headphones.
Excellent sound
While we enjoyed the impressive sound performance of Apple’s first over-the-ear headphones in our Apple AirPods Max review, the price of $ 550 / £ 549 / AU $ 899, the inefficient carrying case and the limited features of Android users mean that we would only recommend it to iOS users with a lot of money to save.
We asked Apple to comment to see if the company can help recruit the condensation issue and update this story accordingly.
