Snow takes over the rest of the day

ROCKFORD (WREX) – The first day of 2021 brought every kind of winter rain: snow, sleet, snow and rain fell at different points of the day. Looking ahead, snow is taking over this evening. Look out for soft roads later tonight.

Back to snow:

In some places in the Stateline, temperatures warmed to freezing, and therefore a variety of showers fell. Hot air is lighter than cold air, causing the precipitation to melt on the way down. However, when it comes close to the ground, freeze it again in a snow or freeze it during contact, it is ice rain.

Snow quickly causes soft roads tonight.

Conditions are falling below freezing tonight, both on the ground and in the air. It causes snowstorms, which we see the rest of the evening.

The snow can accumulate up to 1 to 2 inches. The additional snow showers can cause slippery roads in some places. Look out for slippery conditions tonight. If the temperature is below freezing, rainwater or snow and sleet can also cause freezing and icy patches.

Snow showers dry up by 10pm, and the rest of the night remains dry and quiet.

Quiet weekend:

After a busy week full of snow (and other moods) the weekend usually gives us a break.

Apart from scattered gusts on Saturday night, the weekend remains quiet.

Saturday will remain mostly cloudy but dry, with temperatures warming to freezing. Overnight we can get gusts, but little or no accumulation is expected. Temperatures fall below freezing again on Saturday night, so watch out for icy patches.

Sunday ends the weekend with dry weather. A little more sunshine appears under a partly cloudy sky. The temperature warms up until the low thirties, so we get the chance to thaw a bit and melt or scrape all that is left of the roads and sidewalks. Look for such a lighter weather during the coming week.
