‘SNL’ tackles Derek Chauvin trial, DMX deaths in Minnesota News Sketch

Saturday Night Live tackled the Derek Chauvin trial, Black Lives Matter protests and the death of DMX through the eyes of a Minnesota newscast in the latest cold opening program.

In the sketch, news anchors played by Kenan Thompson, Kate McKinnon, Alex Moffat and Ego Nwodim discuss the George Floyd murder trial, and although all four news students agree that Chauvin should be found guilty – ‘the video recordings alone you have to “Tell everything you need to know what happened,” Moffat said.

“Let’s say we’ve seen this movie before,” says Nwodim’s anchor.

McKinnon said: “Historically, the police have gotten away with such cases.”

‘Historic?’ Ask Thompson.

“She means every time,” Nwodim said.

Chris Penn’s defense attorney was then asked for his opinion on the trial. “I do not want to be fired, but it’s obviously an open and closed matter,” Redd said. “It’s said he’s a white Minnesota cop.”

The heated conversation then shifts to Black Lives Matter protests and the topic of compensation before the anchors move on to other news.

“More sad news this week, unfortunately we lost royals yesterday,” McKinnon’s Joanne said.

“Yes, the rapper DMX is dead,” Egowim’s co-anchor replied.

After a brief discussion of whether Prince Philip was king or not, the anchors turned to a topic almost everyone could agree on: the Matt Gaetz sex scandal.
