In the latest installment of PolygonThe ongoing deep dive series on making classic fighting games, veteran developer Toyohisa Tanabe has revealed that his team at SNK has been experimenting with crossovers so far King of Warriors 98.
‘The team finally made a build-up of King of Warriors 98 with Ryu and Ken [from Street Fighter] in it, ”Tanabe said. ‘It’s not something many people know. [B]ut yes, just for fun, before Capcom teen SNK was a thing, I play like Ryu and Ken in King of Warriors 98.
‘We did it on the development equipment, and of course it was never on a physical pattern. I just remember it now, but it was not just Ryu and Ken that we ended up playing with. We sit in dragon ball characters, like Son Goku, too. ”
Fighter cruisers may be a little old hat now, but in the years before Capcom teen SNK brought his two massive studios together, these kind of matches were the imagination. I certainly hope that, as Samurai Shodown V Perfect, an internal structure of King of Warriors 98 with Ryu, Ken and Goku dust can still be found accumulating somewhere in some SNK dev’s storage units.
