Smaller DC superhero movies will premiere on HBO Max from 2022

HBO Max’s future – at least that features DC Films / Warner Bros. Pictures – still looks great, in the wake of Wonder Woman 1984‘s strong viewers and even after the “Snyder track” of Justice League debut on the streaming service.

As part of a profile by the New York Times, Walter Hamada, president of DC Films, said that while the most expensive superhero movies still appear exclusively in theaters (at a rate of up to four per year, starring in 2022), those with more modest budgets will instead be on HBO Max premiere.

Two examples of the latter, proposed by the Times, the announced films are Batgirl and Static Shock.

In addition, Hamada said: “With every movie we watch now, we think, ‘What’s the potential of Max Spinoff?'”, As evidenced by the already announced discount on James Gunn’s smaller screen. The suicide team (titled John Cena’s Peacemaker) and a “Year One” Prelude to Matt Reeves’ Conductor by Robert Pattinson The Batman (which is currently on track for a theatrical release in March 2022).

Wonder Woman 1984, which had a day-and-date release in theaters and on HBO Max on December 25, was the biggest franchise film to receive any premiere on a streaming service. Zack Snyder’s (much) longer version of 2017’s Justice League will stream exclusively on HBO Max (in multiple parts) in March, while The suicide team is among the very WarnerMedia movies are slated for a 2021 release that will appear simultaneously on HBO Max.
