SLO County opens COVID-19 vaccines for residents aged 50+

(UPDATE 10:19 pm): San Luis Obispo County opens COVID-19 vaccination to all residents 50 years and older.

Public health officials say a larger vaccine offering will enable them to benefit more than 50,000 members of the community.

Some San Luis Obispo County residents told Monday how ecstatic they are to be eligible.

“When I saw it, I felt like I was winning the lottery,” said Melinda Luce, a community member.

“[Seeing the announcement] felt good. I’m 54, so I kept a close eye on the brackets and I think rightly, there were others in line in front of me and that’s how it should be, ‘said resident Jason Wells.

For Wells, the vaccination means seeing his 85-year-old father in person again.

The two could only see each other for almost a year on FaceTime.

“Wow, it gives me chills to think about. I think it’s separate to help you appreciate when you don’t have that much,” Wells said.

SLO resident Traci Bradbury says she is looking forward to going back to some of her favorite local businesses.

“Now I just want to go to the movies. I want to go to the Galaxy Theater in Atascadero,” Bradbury said.

For Melinda Luce, she knows what’s at stake when it comes to COVID-19 after losing her mother to the disease last year.

She says she is excited to go to her vaccination.

“I want to help everyone. I want to be part of the solution to this and I want this virus to end,” Luce said.
