SLO County Health removes backlog of COVID-19 cases, but new issue delays reporting

San Luis Obispo County added nearly 900 new cases of COVID-19 during part of the holiday weekend, bringing the province’s total to 11,284 confirmed cases on January 4th.

On New Year’s Day, 559 cases were reported and on Saturday, 327 cases were reported.

According to the Department of Public Health in San Luis Obispo County, totals are not currently available for Sunday and Monday because the state database, CalREDIE, is experiencing an interruption.

Official health officials say the new cases added over the weekend include the rest of the backlog in cases last week. The backlog of cases in the state’s database is attributed to a change in the way the state allocates suspicious cases to the provinces.

Health officials say the backlog has now been cleared up, but it is unknown when the interruption issue with CalREDIE will be resolved.

They say the issue does not affect the number of cases where hospitalization or deaths are required locally, because the data is assessed separately.

Currently, 49 people with COVID-19 are hospitalized in San Luis Obispo County, including 13 patients who are in the ICU. Another 2417 people are strong at home and according to health officials, 8,714 people have recovered.

According to the COVID-19 dashboard of the state of California, there are currently 22 ICU beds available in San Luis Obispo County.

San Luis Obispo County also reports the deaths of six other people who tested positive for COVID-19.

Health officials say the patients were between the ages of 60 and 100 years old.

San Luis Obispo County attributed 88 deaths to COVID-19.

Forty-four of those deaths occurred in December. Forty percent of the country’s total cases were also reported in December.

Health officials say that with the huge increase in cases over the past few weeks, more people are likely to be exposed to the virus.
