Modiphius Entertainment announced that they were making The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim The Board Game, with plans to launch a crowdfunding campaign on GameFound later this year. Little information was provided about the game, other than the basic description that it would be ‘an epic board game of adventure over Skyrim for 1-4 players’. Modiphius is also the producer of The Elder Scrolls: Call to Arms, a skirmish miniature game with a variety of collaborative and competitive modes that use characters from the popular fantasy video game franchise.
The main news of the announcement is that Modiphius prefers to raise money for the game through GameFound as opposed to Kickstarter. While Kickstarter is the standard publisher for crowdfunding for board game publishers, GameFound is a website founded by Marcin Śværkot, CEO of board game publisher Awaken Realms. Board game campaigns represent about a third of Kickstarter’s annual revenue, and a big competitor in space could be big news in the table industry.
Originally released in 2011, Skyrim has sold more than 30 million copies and has been released on two generations of consoles. The open-world game takes place in the North-inspired land of Skyrim, with the player having different plot lines, ranging from determining the fate of a controversial civil war to dealing with a dragon predicted to destroy the world. Fans wait a decade for the next installment of the popular Elder role and although Bethesda has confirmed that they are working on the next installment, it may still be years before the game is released. We do not yet know much about the new game, although fans apparently think it will play in Hammerfall.
