“It was a selfish decision. There’s no reason I can give you a second chance. I do not expect anyone to ever forgive me, but I want them to at least make me know that I did learn from it, ‘Sylar Mack said in an interview with GMA.
Mack traveled to the Caribbean island on November 27 and according to island rules, he had to be quarantined for 14 days.
But after two days in isolation and a negative COVID-19 test, Mack removed her wrist monitor and violated the quarantine to watch her boyfriend – a professional jet – compete in a race.
“It was a conscious decision … you can give no good reason for that,” Mack said.
Both Mack and her boyfriend, 24-year-old Vanjae Ramgeet, who was charged with assistance, were detained and initially ordered to pay a fine and serve 40 hours of community service.
But after a legal back and forth, the couple were sentenced to two months in prison, which eventually served 32 days.
“I deserved it. I was like, ‘You know what I made this mistake, and it’s very difficult, you know, but you did it to yourself,'” Mack said.
Up to this point, Mack had never tested positive for COVID-19 and no one on the beach seemed to get sick that day. However, Mack admits that if something bad happened to her, she would be responsible.
“I would never be able to live with myself, knowing that I could be the reason someone could – even just being sick – it eats me up.”
Meanwhile, her family is just glad she’s safe and back in America.
‘I got the first call saying she was in trouble. Her boyfriend called while the authorities were talking to her, ‘said her grandmother. “You could probably hear him. He kept saying, ‘Please do not be angry with her. Please do not be angry with her.’ And I’m like ‘but she knows better’. ‘
Now that her granddaughter is back in America?
“It’s the biggest relief I’ve finally slept through the night,” her grandmother said. ‘And it’s quite hard to fall asleep when someone you love so much, you know he’s not sleeping, and that they’re uncomfortable and I know she’s a tough girl, but she had to be scared . ‘
