Skull session: Urban Meyer gets another win over Jim Harbaugh, Meyer can draft Justin Fields and The Narrative Ohio State’s Loss Perpetuates

One of my favorite things so far in 2021 is that Jae’Sean Tate is actually good.

Hand up, I wrote him off because he had no chance in the league unless he developed an outside shot or grew about four inches. He did not do one and it seems like he is just going well!

Word of the day: mellifluous.

ANOTHER WIN OVER HARBAUGH. Urban Meyer stepped out of Jim Harbaugh’s kick two years ago, but he just did it unintentionally.

Look, Harbaugh – widely known for his NFL experience – has some of the worst job security on the planet and for the past month or so has just hung out with any NFL team that will listen and has found no one who would even seriously consider it.

Meanwhile, Meyer, who has done well in his cushy TV position and is an official in the state of Ohio, seems to have begged just as little as the Jacksonville Jaguars to come out of their retirement and coach their football team with absolutely no NFL. experience.

It’s a hilarious tale of two careers.

Draw another big win for Urban Meyer over Jim Harbaugh.

While Harbaugh has found no NFL players other than posting his resume on Monster.com, his bitter old rival will fill the most popular vacancy in the NFL.

Meyer was announced Thursday night as the next coach of the Jacksonville Jaguars, where he will laugh all the way to The Bank (TIAA Bank Field) to take over a franchise that has the prospect of the best quarterback prospect since Andrew Luck (Trevor Lawrence). an additional three top-50 concepts, and more than $ 80 million in cap space.

Not long ago, Harbaugh was one of the biggest stars in the NFL, leading San Francisco to three NFC title games – and a Super Bowl – in his four seasons there. Then he became the most unattainable prize, his early years in Michigan accompanied by an annual wave of wishful thinking.

If you thought it was possible that Meyer – a college coach of all time, but without pro-experience – would be the more popular NFL candidate, I would have property by the sea in Bowling Green to sell you.

And yet we are here.

Personally, I think it would have been hilarious if Harbaugh did get an NFL concert and they ended up in the same section somehow – because you know damn how it would have played out every year.

But it’s also pretty good.

FIELDS FOR FIRST? Trevor Lawrence has been named the best overall pick in the 2021 NFL draft since winning the national title as a true freshman. But if Urban Meyer takes the reins in Jacksonville, is there a chance he’s opting for Justin Fields instead?

There he sits, one of less than 4,000 people allowed into the building, looking down from the upper reaches of the New Orleans Superdome with his future considerations changing careers before his eyes.

Urban Meyer was part of the Fox Sports pre- and post-match program for the Clemson-Ohio CFP semifinal on New Year’s Day, and at that point, reports of his interest in the Jacksonville Jaguars’ head coach vacation had a rolling boiling point.

On one side was Trevor Lawrence of Clemson, the overwhelming favorite for the no. 1 in the NFL draft in 2021. On the other hand: Justin State, Ohio, led by Meyer’s protege, Ryan Day, during a program that reformed Meyer into one of the sport’s undisputed titans.

Oh, to crack Meyer’s head that night as he sat watching Fields Lawrence play out.

There are also reports that Meyer has long been delighted with Lawrence, which should not be so shocking as he placed Lawrence in front of Fields at Fox earlier this season.

Could his opinion have changed dramatically in the last five months? Did Fields’ monster game change anything in New Orleans that night? Could the familiar day perhaps distract his former boss’ thoughts on Fields? And would that even matter?

Meyer has not recruited or coached Fields, but he certainly knows him. He put a basketball game next to him during the first few days at Fields, he was an assistant athletic director the entire time Fields was in Ohio State, and mentored Fields in his leadership classes while Fields was a captain.

That said, I think the whole “Ohio State connection” thing is a bit overblown. If Meyer takes Fields, it’s not because he knows him from leadership classes, but because Fields is his wet dream of a quarterback with his passing and running ability.

The NFL game is different from the pro game now, and Meyer may not be looking for an elite passer built like Herschel Walker. Plus, Meyer was also notorious for Trevor Lawrence, so there’s a good chance the Jags will go anyway.

But personally, I think the debate over Fields vs. Lawrence is going to be much stronger than people think – in this year’s draft and in the years to come.

WHERE IT HURTS. As for the loss of national title matches, I think the loss to Bama this year is as harmless as it gets. I do not really see much long-term damage to the program, and as a fan I am less bitter about this loss than about a typical outcome of the regular season.

But there was one huge missed opportunity that was going to haunt me for a while longer.

Now imagine what that Tweet would say if the Buckeyes beat Bama.

For years, the narrative surrounding college football has been that Alabama and Clemson are in a league of their own and that everyone else is at least a level behind. The state of Ohio had the chance to kill this narrative this year and connect Bama and Clemson with the most titles in the playoffs. Instead, the loss helps it survive.

But it’s good. Let’s just rattle three straight and claim the top spot on our own, cool?

TATE REMAINS A RAT? With the way things shook things for our good friend, Tate Martell, in Miami, I would have had the chance that he would carry this off-season on about -800.

But it still looks like he intends to hold on.

Quarterback Tate Martell was one of four hurricanes to pick for the 2020 season due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

According to a source, Martell plans to return to Miami when the spring semester begins on January 25th.

The staff will definitely have to welcome Martell and talks will have to be held with him to rejoin the team’s activities, as he was not with the team months ago, after serving a suspension until 2020. season to start and was away from the team sometimes due to personal reasons in 2019.

To be completely fair, this does not preclude a transfer. I mean, it’s not like this’s the first time Martell plans to return to school before dropping out a few days later.

And honestly, he should probably transfer. Just as rough as his journey was, he clearly has a bit of talent, and college football would be a lot more fun if he started for a Sun Belt team.

I have no hatred for Tate. I want to see him do his thing somewhere where he will actually have a chance to play, and it’s becoming clear that this is not going to happen in Miami.

ONCE AGAIN. You can rightly expect it to be a busy week for player announcements, as all underclassmen have until Monday to decide if they will fit into the NFL draft.

But we may not hear everyone who is on the fence because the NFL gives seniors extra time.

We’re already heard of Marcus Williamson returning, but there were no official announcements.

For what it’s worth, the majority of Ohio State’s fourth-year players attended Senior Day festivities, presumably indicating they’re on their way out. But there were some notable statements at the front, including Haskell Garrett and Shaun Wade.

I find it hard to believe that we will have to wait for these decisions until March, but if the world’s best defensive pack from the All-Big Ten third team and the best safety on the plan want to tease me for a month and a half, it is their right and I respect it.
