Skiing in avalanche on mountains near Utah resort, currently searching

Authorities are working on a search and rescue operation for a skier buried under an avalanche in Park City, Utah.

Two friends went skiing on a piece of land outside the Park City Mountain Canyons Village resort on Saturday when they caused the avalanche, the Sheriff of Summit County said.

After one of the skiers was trapped in the snow, the other one tried to dig them out. The sheriff was able to reach the skier and try life-saving efforts, the sheriff said, but had to leave the scene as conditions deteriorated.

“The extreme avalanche danger prevented rescuers in the area from entering the area before nightfall,” the sheriff said.

According to the sheriff of Summit County, the authorities will resume search and rescue efforts with the helicopter support on Sunday morning. The sheriff warned skiers to be careful on rural routes and to investigate the avalanche risk at Utah Avalanche Center.
