Sketchy iPad mini 6 leak points in the direction of the Touch ID camera with a punch hole

Alleged CAD-based versions of the iPad mini 6

David Kowalski has leaked several devices over the past twelve months, including the Google Pixel 5, Galaxy Note 20 and iPhone 12 Pro. More recently he shared versions of the iPad Pro (2021), and now he’s again in partnership with Pigtou claimed to share images of the iPad mini 6. Certain elements of this leak look very sketchy, but make sure you take these alleged CAD versions with a nice pinch of salt.

The iPad mini 6 may offer a punch hole camera

The sixth-generation iPad mini offers a much larger 9.1-inch screen with virtually the same dimensions as its predecessor. To be precise, the thickness increased by 0.15 mm, but the height and width remained unchanged.

To make this possible, the thin edges that now sit around the screen. Ming-Chi Kuo hinted at a 9-inch iPad mini 6 with a full screen design last May, so the device pictured above and below is in line with the predictions.

But things get interesting (and much less believable) when you take a closer look at the panel. Unlike other full-screen iPads, the next-generation iPad mini is reportedly introducing a punch-hole tech.

It is used for the selfie camera that is above the screen, which is the most obvious use case. But Apple has never used it before, and its commitments to uniform edges and notches make it a strange move.

This can, of course, be the beginning of a new design language for the business, so the design can quite possibly be accurate.

Apple’s next iPad mini may be the first with Touch ID on screen

The least credible part of these images can be found on the lower half of the screen. The next generation tablet is specifically depicted with a clip for a Touch ID fingerprint scanner.

It is unclear whether this is for illustration to confirm the presence of a Touch ID implementation below the screen, such as those expected in the iPhone 12S later this year, or Apple apparently plans a big cut.

But if the latter is what these versions imply, it seems extremely unlikely, especially for Apple, which tends to avoid unconventional designs at all costs in favor of something simple.

The iPad mini 6 is expected to arrive in the first half of 2021

The iPad mini 6 is expected to arrive in the first half of this year, possibly at an event in late March alongside the iPad Pro (2021) line and a third-generation iPhone SE.

It is to be powered by the A14 Bionic, currently used in the iPhone 12 series, and features a lightning port and 3.5mm headphone jack, both of which are found on the iPad mini 5.

The rest of the tablet’s external package consists of an aluminum housing with a small camera on the back, an on / off button at the top and the volume key on the left side of the frame.
