State health officials on Monday reported 313 additional cases of COVID-19 in Maine, as well as six additional deaths among individuals with the disease.
To date, the Maine Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has detected 29,611 total confirmed or probable cases of COVID-19 since the coronavirus appeared in Maine since March. The 313 cases reported on Monday are lower than the seven-day average of 522 cases, although the health laboratory regularly receives fewer tests for processing or results from other laboratories over the weekends.
With the six additional deaths reported Monday, Maine’s death toll stands at 438 amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

Meanwhile, thousands of additional people are being vaccinated daily for COVID-19, although the rate of vaccinations – in Maine and nationwide – has been slower than expected. New figures were yet to be posted by the Maine CDC on Monday morning, but as of Sunday, 54,557 vaccination shots had been fired in Maine. This includes 48,937 initial doses of the two-shot regimen as well as 5620 seconds.
Vaccinations average about 12,000 a week in Maine, far less than the 50,000 weekly vaccinations that health officials aim to stop the tide against the virus. Shipments of vaccines from the federal government were slower than expected, although Maine was consistently among the states with the highest vaccination rate in the early weeks of vaccination.
Maine’s vaccination plan is currently focused on health workers, along with residents and staff of nursing homes or other long-term care facilities. The next vaccination phase, which is expected to begin in February, will target 75-year-olds and older and essential front-line workers, such as police officers, teachers, grocery stores, post clerks, daycare workers and those involved in food / agricultural production. .
