Singer Vehicle Design

If you know Porsches, chances are good that you know Singer Vehicle Design. The California-based adaptation has been representing the classic Porsche 911s for more than a decade, transforming 964-generation cars into modern artwork that combines vintage style and modern materials in voluptuous packages precisely designed to meet their owners’ wishes.

Although they have turned many 911s into extraordinary rides over the years, all the cars generally have one thing in common: they are designed to be driven on the sidewalk.

Well duh, you might think this is where porsche 911s are suppose to live! Well, not necessarily. The 911 (and the related 959) also played rally cars from time to time; consequently, a car subculture emerged around them. Among those leading the trend: Richard Tuthill, whose UK store specializes in 911 constructions and other off-road Porsche activities.

Now, Tuthill has joined forces with Singer to create what the latter calls the All Terrain Terrain Competition Study: a custom 911 that combines the former’s off-road sensitivity with the latter’s impeccable attention to detail. As you can imagine, this is awfully freaking.

The All Terrain Terrain Competition Study, or ACS, was compiled at the request of one of the loyal returning customers of Singer Vehicle Design, designed to create a vintage 911 capable of participating in off-road racing such as the Baja 1000 and Dakar to take. Rally and, you know, just an explosion in the dirt.

Like all Singer designers, the ACS is based on a Porsche 964 chassis – in this case one from the 1990 model year. Except for the skeleton, however, there are not many stock components left.

The most striking change, of course, is the ride height: the ACS stands much longer than a stock 911, thanks to a long suspension with dual adjustable dampers for each wheel. BFGoodrich All Terrain Terrain tires rotate around 16-inch wheels ready for the throbbing pain of off-road racing.

Power comes naturally from a boxer-six. In this case, it is a 3.6-liter turbocharged unit, which delivers 450 horsepower and 420 pounds of torque in basic form, but can be increased if necessary for competition.

All power flows through a five-speed consecutive gearbox to all four wheels, with front, center and rear limited slip separations to utilize the car’s maximum power. Four-piston monoblock steel brakes slow things down, while a hydraulic handbrake is also there for dirty drives.

Inside, the occupants are protected by an FIA wheelchair and held in place by FIA-certified racing chairs. There is a navigation system ready for racing, as well as a “rehydration” setup for both residents, as drinkers hold a water bottle.

As is the tradition for singers, the body is carbon fiber. Not only does it reduce weight, it also makes it easier to replace body panels that get damaged during off-road driving or to gain access to the car’s lower abdomen to perform quick repairs – something you quite possibly want if you 50 km from everywhere in Baja is California with an injured car.

In what can only be described as a hellish twist, the loyal Singer enthusiast who put the ACS into use actually ordered two versions: one painted Parallax White (a distinctive Singer shade) made more for off-road racing, and a second painted Corsica Red more adapted to drive fast on sidewalks.

If you like what you see here, good news: the person who commissioned the ACS has ever so generously agreed to make the design available to other people interested in asking Singer to launch a 911 in the same way fit.

Of course, do not expect it to be cheap. ‘The price for the restoration services, based on the results of the site competition study, will depend on the specification chosen by the owner,’ reads Singer’s press release – but considering Singer’s regular constructions, it’s about a half a million dollar range, do not expect it to be near affordable.

Then again … if you have money, can you think of a cooler field toy?
