Like a nostalgia bomb squarely aimed at arcade goers from the 90’s, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder’s Revenge will surely delight anyone who remembers pumping quarters into Konami’s cooperative closets. The new game, developed by Dotemu (Strate of Rage 4) and tribute games (Mercenary Kings), is a four-player brawler who looks like a natural successor to Turtles in time, Game Informer reports. And don’t worry, it takes no cues from modern CG Turtles remakes – it looks like it’s almost entirely syndicated from the ’80s TMNT cartoon. Just as the nostalgia gods intended it.
The co-founder of Tribute Games, Jean-Francois Major, tells Game Informer that their goal, along with Dotemu, was to bring the series back to everyone who grew up with the old cartoon and arcade titles. “Because we felt people were missing it,” he said. ‘And we included, because I personally played those games a lot as a kid and miss them a lot. So that was the idea that started it. ”
Details are still being finalized for Shredder’s Revenge – no time frame or specific console platforms have been mentioned yet – but from the above trailer, it’s clear that Dotemu and Tribute Games are aimed at recreating the joy of fighting with your friends as your favorite Ninja Turtle. (And we all know that Leonardo is the best, come.) Fortunately, the game seems to be recreating the original sprite-based aesthetics with the smoothness of the modern 60FPS game. And while the development teams keep themselves busy with additional improvements, I hope we get the chance to play as Splinter and April as well.
