To the editor:
Looks like our governor of the boat did it again.
Blow the towns in with one of his ‘I’m not amazing’ media events. Last week, he showed up at UF Health Hospital to outline his plan for distributing the COVID vaccine. The announcement that he would violate CDC guidelines and make the next wave of vaccine available to those over 65 years of age. This seems like a reasonable decision. He gives the impression that it is all for the right people to get the vaccine as soon as possible.
But now, here’s the good part: Lake and Marion counties have announced their plans for distribution – but Sumter County (where the majority of The Villages is located) has no plans so far because they do not know what and when the provincial award is not going to be. . But the showboat appears in The Villages without a plan for the vast majority of residents.
Then the showboat has the audacity to stand back and watch five non-essentials being vaccinated. This group included a loser from the recent provincial supervisory election, and two community development supervisors, plus two other non-essentials.
The indifferent bile of two elected community development supervisors who put themselves at the head of the pack to be vaccinated is disgusting. They should be ashamed of themselves and their self-sufficient conduct should not go unnoticed. (Full disclosure – I am an elected supervisor in Community Development District 2 – my ethics could not let me prevail with the residents who elected me). The right thing for showboat to do would have been to go to a nursing home in the area and to showcase a vaccinated resident.
As I previously suggested, DeSantis should have stayed out of The Villages when he staged the fake Test effort on the polo fields. He blew into the city – made a large part of the start of testing – left the city and immediately there was no test available.
To put it bluntly, this is not a Republican or Democratic issue – it’s simply my opinion on another supreme example of conspicuous and disgusting self-serving and failed judgment of some elected officials.
Now for good news. The Sumter County Department of Health deserves a big shout out for the excellent service they now provide for COVID testing. It’s easy and important, free, without insurance. Simply call the Sumter County Department of Health (352-569-3102) and request an appointment. Tests are available in The Villages in the appendix at Morse and 466.
