Shock: Jim Rutherford, General Manager of Penguins, Resigns

Wow, that was unexpected. Penguins general manager Jim Rutherford announced his resignation today.

From the team:

“It was a great honor to serve as general manager of the Penguins and to hang two more Stanley Cup banners at PPG Paints Arena,” Rutherford said. ‘I have so many people to thank, starting with the owners, Ron Burkle and Mario Lemieux, and team president David Morehouse. There was always so much support from everyone involved with the Penguins, both on the hockey and business staff, and of course from a special group of players led by Sidney Crosby. The fans here were great for me and my family. I know it’s a little unusual to let this happen during a season, but just feel like it’s the right time to step away. “

“Jim was an amazing representative of the Pittsburgh Penguins, and he will always have a special place in the history of our team, his own legacy,” said David Morehouse, president and CEO of Penguins. ‘He will always be part of the Penguins. On behalf of our ownership, management, staff, coaches and players, we would like to thank him for his many contributions that go far beyond the two Stanley Cups. Jim is a great friend and teammate. We wish him and his family the best. ”

Allvin, 46, was named assistant general manager in November 2020. The native of Falun, Sweden, is in his 15th season with the staff of the Penguins hockey industry and started in 2006-07 as a scout. He was director of amateur exploration from 2017-20.

“I’m excited about this new opportunity with the Penguins, but I would not be in this position if it were not for Jim’s confidence in me over the past seven years,” Allvin said. “I want to thank him and wish him all the best. To move forward, I want everyone, from our ownership to fans, to know that I am committed to doing the best job possible for the Penguins, and building on our strong start to the season. ”
