Shield TV adds PS5, Xbox Series X controller support

If you’re a Nvidia Shield TV owner, another update is on the way. Shield Experience Upgrade 8.2.2 provides support for PS5 and Xbox Series X / S controllers on Nvidia Shield TV.

The 27th in a long line of software updates for the Android TV-based Nvidia Shield series provides support for two new controllers. These are specifically the controllers that come with Sony’s new PlayStation 5 as well as Microsoft’s new controller for the Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S.

To connect the controllers, you only need to follow a few steps:

  • DualSense: Hold down PlayStation and Share / Clip button until the light turns blue.
  • Xbox Series X / S: Hold down the Coupling button until the Xbox button clicks.

When paired, these controllers can be used with Nvidia’s own GeForce Now streaming service as well as native Android games. Technically speaking, it should also work with Stadia if you download the app.

In addition to PS5 and Xbox Series X / S controller, this Nvidia Shield TV update also offers some other tweaks. There’s a new integration of Control4, a home automation system for other smart home appliances. The systems can now control Shield TVs with the Control4 app and the remote control to fully control the Shield TV and installed programs.

Finally, Nvidia also notes that this update provides the December 2020 Android security solution, as well as a solution for 2019 Shield TV remotes for using IR to control Denon receivers.
