CHICAGO – Shane Bieber was brilliant nine innings, but the Cleveland Indians had to pass ten times on Tuesday for their first win against the Chicago White Sox in 2021.
Roberto Perez’s single on the RBI field broke a pointless strike in extra innings against left-wing Chicago’s Garrett Crochet. Franmil Reyes, the automatic extra runner, jumped to the gap between third base and shortstop on Perez’s slow pace to give Cleveland the lead. Clipper Amed Rosario added an RBI double from Crochet (0-2, 0.00) for a 2-0 lead.
James Karinchak kept the lead upright and scored a pointless ninth place for his second career saving. Karinchak knocks out Nick Williams and gets Jake Lamb to fly out to the warning lane ready for the final game.
Bieber’s effort highlights a match between the right hand of the bait and the Lucas Giolito of Chicago, who fought the winner of the American League Cy Young Award in 2020 to a deadlock through the first seven frames. But through Bieber’s efficiency, he was able to hold through the ninth, where he hit Yoan Moncada with two runners at the base before going out with a scream and a fist pump as he stepped off the hill.
Manager Terry Francona ran out of superlatives to describe Bieber’s outing.
“I thought he was great,” Francona said. ‘You choose the adjective and you can put my name on it. I thought it was one of the best matches on both sides I have seen in a long time. ”
Nine of the last 12 matches between the clubs have been decided by two runs or less. The Indians have been 55-33 against the White Sox since 2016.
Bieber (1-1, 2.11) started extending his series to 15 with at least eight strokes, tying Pedro Martinez and Randy Johnson for the third longest game in MLB history. Only Martinez (16) and Johnson (17) have longer streaks with at least eight strokes.
Bieber recorded his first elimination Tuesday to third innings on a sharp archery ball in the dirt after Adam Eaton. In front of the field, Bieber initially selected frontrunner Danny Mendick after Mendick played out with one. He finished with 11 strikeouts, giving him three straight double-digit heats to open the season and 18 such starts in his career. He becomes the second Indian pitcher with three double-digit knockout games starting the season, joining Sam McDowell (1970).
Perez said the plan was to attack White Sox hitters early with Bieber’s sliding bar against right-handed hitters and to strike with his fast ball into the hitting zone.
“He threw the ball well, man,” Perez said. ‘I love it when he gets into the groove where he sticks out a lot of people. We felt like they never adjusted his break balls, so we went like one or six in a row in one inning. But he was good tonight. ‘
Bieber was extraordinarily efficient with his stands and threw just nine balls from the hitting zone on 44 lanes to the first 13 containers he faced. He hoisted five of the next seven batsmen after Eaton and reached the sixth after throwing just 58 spots.
Bieber said that early in the game it was obvious that Chicago hitters were not trying to count deeply.
“They tried to be aggressive and luckily I was able to get my stuff out of touch,” Bieber said.
But while Bieber kept White Sox hitters at arm’s length, Giolito’s pitch gradually climbed.
The White Sox referee struck five of the first 14 batsmen he faced and was in 63 places through four overs. Only Eddie Rosario’s lead double in the second and his inside zone with two out in the fourth provided Cleveland with the offense.
Cesar Hernandez pulled the first run of the match in the sixth position of Giolito by two, but was stranded when Jose Abreu made a nice stop on a hard-hitting ground ball by Jose Ramirez to end the innings.
Rosario helped Bieber’s case early on by chasing a deep ride from Eaton to the warning lane on the left in the first and jumped to pick up a line drive from the bat of Yasmani Grandal in the second.
“Eddie played some great plays in the left field and of course the whole field did tremendously,” Bieber said. ‘And I can not say enough about Roberto (Perez) and how quickly he can recognize another team’s game plan and how my stuff works from a different point of view. So it was definitely satisfying. ”
Following: The series continues on Wednesday as the Indians will send right-handed Zach Plesac (1-1, 1.38) to the hill. The White Sox will counter left-wing Carlos Rodon (1-0, 0.00), who originally hosted Monday’s series opener. The first pitch is set for 20:10 from the warranty rate field.
