The crash happened on I-24 East near Old Hickory Boulevard around 8 p.m. Nashville Police Department said on Twitter.
Twelve people were taken to local hospitals, firefighters said. Twelve others involved in the crash were not injured.
According to the National Weather Service in Nashville, there was advice on winter weather for much of Tennessee on Saturday morning.
“Freezing rain, icy fog and light freezing rain can create very slippery conditions this morning. Delay and be extra careful when traveling,” said the NWS tweeted before the accident.
The message boards on Saturday on I-24 read: “Reduce speed, patches of ice possible, be careful,” according to the Tennessee Department of Transportation.
The driveway was reopened after being salted, officials said.
