PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – Seven people were shot dead in broad daylight near Olney Transport Station in SEPTA on Wednesday afternoon. Philadelphia police say the shooting took place shortly before 3pm in Broad Street and Olney Avenue.

Six of the victims were taken to Albert Einstein Medical Center while the others were transported by police to Temple University Hospital. Police say the victims range from 17 to 70 years old.

Police say an unidentified victim is in the most serious condition. The 17-year-old girl sustained a wound to her arm and the 70-year-old was shot in the thigh.

“It’s very good. We had officers, whether it comes from SEPTA, were out here. “We were able to get someone in custody as quickly as we could, because we had officers in the area working on another assignment,” said Police Commissioner Danielle Outlaw. “So it’s not because of our lack of presence out here, but I think it’s very telling that people who are willing to take part in this shooting are talking more and more courage, regardless of whether they see us here.”
A person has been arrested following a foot chase by police, but their involvement in the shooting is not yet known. Two firearms were recovered.
Police are asking witnesses to share any information.
“It happens way too often, it happened in broad daylight and we all need to get together to help us resolve these issues,” Outlaw said.
