Seven children killed after two car accidents in California set fire to vehicle

A horrific accident on a rural highway in California left nine people, including seven children, dead, officials said.

The attack took place on New Year’s Day on Highway 33, about 90 minutes north of Bakersfield, around 8 p.m., when the driver of a 2013 Dodge apparently veered off the road, Officer Rory Marks told the Los Angeles Times.

Authorities said the motorist, a 28-year-old man, corrected too much and eventually crashed into a northbound Ford with seven children and one adult.

The impact set the Ford on fire. All the victims were pronounced dead at the scene and had yet to be identified as of Saturday.

“We have no witnesses to it except the people who came across it,” Marks told the newspaper. “We seek help if anyone knows anything.”

The cause of the accident is being investigated.
