‘Serial breakaway’ with history of sneaking on flights arrested in Chicago O’Hare

A woman with a history of a “serial getaway” and sneaking flights has been arrested at Chicago O’Hare International Airport after police were tipped off by her ankle bracelet, officials said Wednesday.

Marilyn Hartman, 69, is already awaiting sentencing because she was trying to sneak onto a commercial vessel when her GPS single bracelet went off around 12:00 on Tuesday, according to a statement from the Sheriff’s Office in Cook County.

The statement indicated that Hartman had to stay outside the residential facility where she had a mandate. After Hartman did not pick up her phone, authorities said they noticed the ankle bracelet that was on its way to O’Hare.

She arrived at Terminal 1 at about 13:38 CT and an ‘alarm siren was activated on Hartman’s device’ which led to her arrest by the Chicago police before she could enter a safe area, ‘the sheriff said.

Hartman will be charged with escaping due to Tuesday’s trip to O’Hare, the sheriff said. She was still in custody on Wednesday, without bail until her next court appearance, which is scheduled for Thursday according to the jail record.

It was not clear on Wednesday whether Hartman had appointed a lawyer, the sheriff said. A representative for the Cook County Attorney’s Office could not be immediately reached for comment.

Hartman has a long history of entry. Since the first incident at San Francisco International Airport in February 2014, she has been accused in addition to Chicago of similar incidents in Los Angeles, Arizona and Minnesota.

Back in 2018, Hartman snuck into a British Airways flight and took it to London before the airline realized she did not have a ticket and sent her back to Chicago.
