Sergeant from the Army drill who was found dead in the car in Texas was shot several times: reports

A U.S. Army drilling sergeant in Texas who was found in her car, who was shot several times, reportedly died early on New Year’s Day.

Sgt. Jessica Mitchell, 30, was on vacation when she was found near Interstate 10 in San Antonio at about 3 a.m. Friday, the military said according to FOX 29 in San Antonio.

Mitchell was assigned as a dental specialist to the U.S. Army Medical Center of Excellence at the San Antonio-Fort Sam Houston Joint Base.

“We are devastated by the tragic loss of Drilling Sergeant Jessica Mitchell,” Major-General Dennis LeMaster of the Center of Excellence said in a statement, according to a San Antonio Express News release.

“Our deepest condolences to her family and friends. We are committed to supporting Drill Sergeant Mitchell’s family as well as her soldiers during this extremely difficult time.”

The Dodge Challenger in which Mitchell was found showed numerous signs of gunfire in the door and window on the driver’s side, the newspaper reported.

“I told all my kids, I want you to do better than I did,” her father, Mayo Mitchell, told FOX 29. “She and my children have had so far and she wanted to be the best she could be in her military career. But it was cut short.”

Mitchell’s death follows a previous family tragedy: In 2017, her brother, Justice Mitchell, was shot dead at the age of 18, reports San Antonio’s WOAI-TV.

Mitchell had no pulse and was pronounced dead at the hospital within an hour, KSAT-TV in San Antonio reported.

The case is being investigated by murder detectives, but authorities have not yet made any arrests or named suspects.

The San Antonio Police Department and the Army’s Criminal Investigation Department are investigating, according to KSAT.

Mitchell’s death comes days after unidentified skeletal remains were found near the base and months after the body of Army Spc. Vanessa Guillén was killed in a Fort Hood armor. She was allegedly killed by another soldier.
