Seoul’s 50-year-old advice to pregnant women comes under fire

The city government in Zealand’s Pregnancy and Childbirth Information Center has published the guidelines on January 5 on its website, with instructions to “prepare fast food such as curry, black bean paste and soup so that the man, who is not familiar with cooking, will be able to use it easily.”

The guidelines also state that pregnant women should “prepare underwear, socks, shirts, handkerchiefs and outerwear in the drawer for the husband and children to wear for three to 7 days while you are in the hospital,” and recommend that a hairband for sale “so you do not look messy, because you can not wash your hair for a while.”

While some parts of the guidelines remain online, the points that have come in for criticism have recently been deleted. However, screenshots of the original version are still circulating on social media.

The advice also suggested that women lose weight by performing household chores such as washing dishes and cleaning.

“If you stretch your hand forward when sweeping the floor, you can stretch your back, shoulder and arm muscles,” read the guidelines.

“Hang out clothes you wore before you got married, or small clothes you want to wear after giving birth and look at them if you want to eat more than you need or skip the workout,” they continued.

Shocked South Koreans have launched a petition calling for the official responsible for the post to be punished and for a public apology.

Others expressed their outrage on Twitter.

“The person who wrote it, the one who reviewed it, even the city manager of Seoul who posted it. They’re all crazy,” wrote one.
‘Seoul’s guideline for pregnant women is disgusting, ” wrote another. “The fact that they are trying to sacrifice women is as clear as a glass marble.”
“It’s not even someone who posted it, it’s the information center for pregnancy and childbirth in Seoul, the city … I wonder what they think of women and pregnant women,” wrote a third. “I hate this country.”

The city government in Seoul did not immediately respond to CNN’s request for comment.
