Troops from Virginia, Maryland and Washington, DC’s national guard were deployed to suppress the violence. Hours after the initial violation, law enforcement officials announced that the Capitol was secure.
The Senate reconvened at around 20:00 ET and the House convened again at 21:00 to continue the counting of election votes.
“The United States and the United States Congress have faced far greater threats than the fearless crowd we have seen today,” Senate Leader Mitch McConnel said. “We have never been deterred before. And we will not be deterred today.”
Mr. Trump has told his supporters to go home, but reiterates the false, inflammatory allegation that the election was stolen. “We must have peace, we must have law and order,” the president said.
