Granholm has long had a deep interest in energy issues and was considered a top candidate for energy secretary if Hillary Clinton were to win in 2016.
Granholm served two terms as governor of Michigan and was first elected in 2002. She was the first woman to be elected governor of the state, and was elected in 2006 with the largest number of votes cast for the state at the time, according to her biography page on the state’s official website.
Before he was elected governor, Granholm was elected attorney general of the state in 1998, and he was also the first woman to serve in the role.
