Seminole County opens first vaccine for elderly residents at Oviedo Mall

SEMINOLE COUNTY, Fla. Seminole County was one of eight provinces in the state selected for a pilot program with workers distributing the Modern COVID-19 vaccine at the Oviedo Mall this week.

Seminole County Emergency Manager Alan Harris said he had been talking about this program for about six months, saying he was very outspoken with state leaders and said he would like to be part of the pilot program.

Other counties in Florida that are part of the program will also soon fire shots, Harris said, including neighboring Orange County.

Shots would start at 1pm near the food court of the Oviedo Mall opposite the Loft Outlet.

“We are the first province in the state to do so, and that this vaccine is available to the public,” said Lee Constantine, president of Seminole County. ‘This is a very exciting day for all of us and especially for our residents. It’s also a great day for the state of Florida, because again, starting now, we’ll save lives one at a time. ”

He said he told Florida officials that the country was prepared and even submitted plans months ago to show what was put in place to make it happen.

Harris said the pilot program was to see how it would work for provinces to set up distribution points.

He told News 6 that Seminole County had been selected and that it had received 8,100 doses of Modner COVID-19 vaccine. He said the country is prepared to receive Pfzier vaccines and has the freezer.

“We’ll do up to 700 a day,” Harris said.

When the online portal for people 65 and older opened to sign up to get the vaccine, Harris said all the appointments were booked within hours.

‘I expected there to be concern about the conspiracy theories about the vaccine, but it’s clear that people read, that they got the facts, that they threw away the stupid conspiracy theories and that they were interested in the vaccine and their own lives. to save, ”Harris said.

Harris said it is essential that people make an appointment. There is no running in appointments.

“Because we have to thaw the doses,” he said. “So we have to have the exact amount of doses every day.”

After a nasty vaccine is opened, it must be used within six hours, Seminole County Health Officer Donna Walsh said. If someone does not show up, they call individuals on a waiting list, but Walsh hopes people will keep their appointments.

‘We have thirty days to use the refrigerated product once it has been thawed, and we are very careful not to go into a bottle until we have ten people. So we know we can use the bottle within six hours, ”said Walsh.

Jeff Wray said he is one of those who will be getting the COVID-19 vaccine at the Oviedo Mall.

“I hope that once I get through this, others will see that there is no problem taking the vaccine and protecting not only themselves but also their family and others they come in contact with,” Wray said.

People can make an appointment by going to prepareseminole.org or calling the Mayor’s Center at 407-665-0000. People who are eligible for the vaccine can also go directly to Eventbrite to make an appointment.

All appointments for this week were booked from Monday morning and the province would open the site at 11am for more bookings, but the site experienced an interruption on Monday morning.

“The Seminole County website is currently down and phone lines are busy as residents of 65+ are trying to register for a COVID-19 vaccine,” the country said in a tweet. “We appreciate your patience as we work through these issues.”

Harris said the province is working to get more servers online to handle the demand.

Residents over the age of 65 who make appointments will be vaccinated according to a news release in the food court across the Loft store. People should enter the mall between Paul Mitchell School and Oyishi Steakhouse, near the north entrance of the food court.

As of Dec. 28, only the following groups are eligible for vaccines: residents age 65 and older, residents and staff at long-term care facilities, EMTs and paramedics, Florida Department of Health clinical staff providing services, and health workers.

Residents can also send COVID19INFO to 888-777 to receive notifications when the vaccine is available for more groups.

Provincial officials said a letter of approval from a doctor to receive the vaccine was no longer needed.

From 20:00 on Monday, all appointments are filled until 9 January.

Seminole County, as well as other provincial leaders in Central Florida, are working with the Florida Emergency Management Division to expedite the distribution of vaccines to more of their residents.

Walsh estimated that the vaccines would be available to a wider population in March or April, but if the Federal Medicine Administration approves additional vaccines, that could speed up the timeline.
