Seeing police chase after a stolen 996 GT3 is hilarious and sad

In the introduction to Top Gear’s famous cheap police car challenge, Jeremy Clarkson enchanted the rather undramatic nature of the English police towards their American counterparts. I couldn’t help but think of watching this video of police in the West Midlands chasing a man driving a stolen 996 generation Porsche 911 GT3. It’s as sad as it is unintentionally funny.

It’s sad, of course, because we hate to have such a cool car stolen and damaged in the process of apprehending the thief – who is currently in jail – according to West Midlands police, because just look. The ensuing officer recounts the proceedings in such a calm manner that it does not correspond at all to what is happening. How many other police can you imagine describing those who are chasing them as ‘struggling to catch up?’

As it turns out, the driver of the GT3 rolled onto a roundabout, which allowed police to overtake the driver, with one car eventually crashing into a snow bank. At that point, the GT3 is really struggling for traction as it bounces the car off the revs that turn its wheels. One policeman then smashes the GT3’s window and catches the thief.

‘We have arrested a car thief after a dramatic chase in Birmingham city center. The driver was locked up just two hours after stealing the Porsche 911, ‘West Midlands police wrote in an online statement. “The high-performance car sped away and shot through a red light. But driver Lee Smythe would soon realize that Porsches do not handle the rear-wheel drive too well on snowy, icy January roads!”

Hopefully the car will be brought back to perfect health, because if it’s a true 996 GT3 – and I believe it is, given the sound and its unique bucket seats – it’s one of the most amazing 911s of all time. And if it’s the prospective West Midlands thieves, let it be a warning – the police will get you and they will do it in an extraordinarily calm way.
