Second-generation AirPods Pro is widely rumored to launch in the first half of 2021

Apple plans to release the second-generation AirPods Pro within the first half of 2021, according to unnamed industry sources quoted by the Taiwanese publication. DigiTimes in a report focusing on memory provider Winbond.

From the report:

Winbond is also expected to be among the NOR flash vendors for Apple’s next-generation AirPods Pro, which will be launched later in the first half of this year, sources said. The Taiwan-based chipmaker will utilize its almost full-capacity NOR flash production lines during the six months.

This follows a report from the Japanese blog Mac Otakara which claimed that the new AirPods Pro will be released in April along with a third-generation iPhone SE. The report does not contain any details about the new AirPods Pro, except that the wireless charging case will be slightly modified compared to the original.

Bloomberg‘s Mark Gurman reported earlier that Apple wants to make the AirPods Pro more compact by eliminating the handle that protrudes from the bottom of the headphones, but it’s unclear whether Apple will achieve this. Gurman said Apple had a design to form a rounder shape that fills more of the ear, similar to Google’s Pixel Buds or Samsung’s Galaxy Buds. That report also mentions a 2021 release date.

The current AirPods Pro, launched in November 2019, features an in-ear design with three sizes of soft, flexible silicone tips included in the box, along with shorter stems under the ear. AirPods Pro has several upgraded features over normal AirPods, including active sound suppression, improved sound quality, and water and sweat resistance.

Previous rumors have suggested that Apple also plans to update the standard AirPods in the first half of 2021 with a design similar to the AirPods Pro, but without active noise cancellation, allowing for a lower price point. The current range includes the standard AirPods with a wired boot for $ 159 or a wireless boot for $ 199, and the AirPods Pro with a wireless boot for $ 249.
