Schwarzkopf Hair Dye Blister’s Mum’s Scalp After Allergic Reaction

There’s a mom left hospitalized after she had a severe reaction to hair dye, which covered her scalp with blisters and her eyes were swollen.

Leonie Dee, 27, wanted to dye her hair in two different shades, with Schwarzkopf Live in ‘Cosmic Blue’ and ‘Ultra Violet’ costing her £ 4.79 each.

The mother of four says she performed a patch test on both products to ensure she would have no adverse reaction.

Leonie, who works as a cleaner for her local GP in Aberaeron, Wales, said: ‘It was really tight – at one point they were worried that the swelling might move to my throat.

‘I even asked them in the hospital if it would help to shave my hair. I was ready to do it if it would make a difference.

“But the dye had already taken up in my scalp, so there was nothing to wait for but the swelling and blisters went off.

“I will definitely never dye my hair again – I’m going to let it grow out and then just leave it.”

Leonie said she dyed her hair regularly as a teenager, but after having children – now 11, 10, three and six months old – she found she ‘could not be bothered’ and did not dye it for seven years.

While she wanted to “find a change” this time, she said she was “really religious” about reading the pamphlet in the box and performing the patch test.

No problems with the patch test came up, and she colored the bottom half of the color hair press.

“When I woke up the next morning, my ears and the side of my neck started to swell a bit – but I was able to manage it by just taking a few allergy tablets I had at home.”

When Leonie wakes up on Saturday morning, she finds her hairline is covered with this big blase ‘ and her eyes were so swollen that she could see nothing.

Sy was rushed to Aberystwyth Hospital at 6pm on Saturday night, 36 hours spent there to be treated steroids, anti-allergic tablets and creams, and was also put on liquid drip.

Leonie said: ‘The blisters kept sticking out blue dye and running out.

“They had to turn off the lights above my hospital bed because the light irritates my eyes. All I could do was sit and wait until it got better.”

She returned home at 10.30 on Monday morning, but the swelling did not go down completely.

“I just have to keep taking the medication – and wait until my hair grows out and goes back to normal,” she said.

Leonie said she has since done more research on the Schwarzkopf hair dye, en found out that the darker colours as Cosmic Blue has a higher concentration of the active ingredients, to which she thinks she has responded.

She is also submitted an online questionnaire to Schwarzkopf in the first step of filing a complaint.
