According to three people familiar with the matter, Politico said Pelosi himself campaigned on his behalf for the appointment of Schiff, although a Pelosi spokesman declined to comment.
Representatives of Schiff and Newsom did not immediately respond to The Hill’s requests for comment.

Becerra will evacuate the attorney general if confirmed by the Senate to the HHS secretary. If Schiff takes over the role, it will take about six months before a special election takes place to select Schiff’s replacement in the House.
