A coast-to-coast winter storm has brought snow and ice across the country, from Seattle to San Antonio, bringing icy temperatures and glowing suspects to regions unaccustomed to severe winter weather.

According to the National Weather Service, there were at least 150 million Americans under winter weather or ice advice.

The Southwest Power Pool, which manages the electricity grid in at least a portion of 14 states, has ordered members of electricity services to start with controlled breakdown points of electricity services because of the demand for power in the region, driven by the bitter cold, the system.

“This is an unprecedented event and is the first time that SPP has ever had to call for controlled service interruptions,” said Lanny Nickell, chief operating officer of the power pool, in a statement.

Bitter temperatures were expected to continue until Tuesday from the Rocky Mountains to the Appalachians, with readings of 25 to 45 degrees Fahrenheit for this time of year lower than normal, the National Weather Service said.
