Even when Sarah Silverman joked about Paris Hilton at the MTV Movie Awards in 2007, she felt bad about it. Fourteen years later, she publicly asked for forgiveness.
Silverman recalled sending an apology to Hilton a few days after it happened, but she never heard from her again. She would not expect, she said, but it bothered her that Hilton did not seem to know she had reached out.
“I did not regret the jokes years later, but similar,” Silverman said Thursday. The Sarah Silverman Podcast. “And I wrote her to let her know, but I know now that the letter did not get her. So here I am, 14 years later, telling you, Paris, that I’m really sorry. I was then, and I’m much more complete, and with much more understanding, I think, now. I can not imagine what you went through at that point. My understanding of humanity through the lens of my work as a comedian has not yet merged. “I’m sorry I hurt you. Comedy, you know, is not evergreen.”
The jingles were about the fact that Hilton, one of the greatest celebrities of that era, would be about to serve a prison sentence for a liquor offense related to alcohol. What Silverman did not know when she planned her monologue was that Hilton would be in the audience.
“I also did not know that she would go straight from the event to the jail that evening. I told a lot of hard jokes about her, and she was there,” Silverman said, recalling that the crowd loved them. “And while I was excited about the success of my monologue, I remember seeing her in the audience. I really do. And I remember seeing the face on her face, and my heart sank. Because there was a person down there was. ‘
Silverman brought the incident to the fore after Hilton called her on her own podcast, This is Paris, Monday.
“I was so shocked and amazed because I had actually met her at an event a few years before and she was sweet,” Hilton said.
The DJ remembers wearing a brave face, but said Silverman’s jabs on her were ‘so mean, so cruel’.
“I sat there and wanted to die, I held back tears, I had tears in my eyes,” Hilton said. “I literally wanted to run out of the whole room. The whole audience laughed and she did not want to stop.”
Silverman agrees with Hilton’s assessment that her jokes in 2021 would be different.
“You know, as she herself said on the podcast, it’s never going to happen today, and she’s right. “I will never make such jokes today,” Silverman said. “I’ve actually spent the last few years trying to do comedy that tries to marry stubborn jokes with, you know, a real heart. At the time, the consensus seemed like it was not possible. And I did. “fully accepted. I came at a time when talk shows and comedians hired to mock pop culture were roasting the greatest celebrities and pop culture icons at the time. And no one was bigger than Paris Hilton.”
In response to this, Hilton said in a podcast update that she was ‘shocked’ and ‘pleasantly surprised’ by Silverman’s remarks: “I could see that she really meant what she said when she said she apologized.
“Thank you. I really appreciate it,” Hilton said. “I know it’s hard for anyone to apologize, and for someone to do it really means a lot.”
She said she was glad that Silverman’s comedy had increased, and that the comedian realized the effect of her words. Hilton ‘got a little teary-eyed’ when Silverman talked about the reality star’s appearance.
“We’ve all said things in our past that we felt bad about and later regretted,” Hilton said. “And just, I do not know, I think everyone is guilty of it.”
She said she never received Silverman’s letter, but that she would like to read it because the night ‘haunted’ her.
“Apologies are never too late, so that’s OK,” Hilton said. ‘But yes, I wish whoever you gave it to had given it to me, because it would just, I do not know, mean a lot at the time, especially at a time when I was going through so much. “
Just last month, Silverman apologized to Britney Spears for jokes she made the same night as Hilton’s.
Silverman said she is happy to be part of a world that has awakened.
