San Francisco 49ers lose Martin Mayhew to Washington

The 49ers will not lose the vice president of player staff Adam Peters, but will loses the VP of player staff Martin Mayhew to the Washington Football Team according to Ian Rapoport of the NFL Media.

Mayhew’s role in Washington is unknown, but he will not take over as general manager as the team wants to appoint Marty Hurney to the post.

Since Hurney will take over the title of general manager, Mayhew’s departure means the 49ers will not be rewarded with a compensatory draft for the third round. The extensive Rooney rule requires that minority candidates be appointed as head coach and general manager to receive the additional draft picks.

Athletic Matt Barrows wrote that San Francisco does not expect any compensation.

Mayhew joined the 49ers front office in 2017 as senior personnel manager. Before the 2019 season, he received a promotion to the VP of player staff. Before coming to San Francisco, Mayhew spent a year at the New York Giants’ front office. He previously spent 15 seasons with the Detroit Lions, seven of which served as general manager.
