San Diego Padres acquires Joe Musgrove, right-hand man of Pittsburgh Pirates, says sources

The San Diego Padres are agreeing on a deal to acquire the right-hand man Joe Musgrove of the Pittsburgh Pirates, sources told Jeff Passan of ESPN.

The trade for Musgrove depends, according to sources, and will send a huge package of prospects back to the Pirates. Hudson Head, a reputed center fielder, is expected to be among the group heading to Pittsburgh.

Musgrove (28) was 1-5 with an ERA of 3.86 in eight starts for the Pirates in the coronavirus shortened 2020 season.

Musgrove, the team’s opening part for the opening day in 2020, will earn $ 4.45 million in 2021 after he and the Pirates agreed on a contract last Friday to avoid arbitration.

He is 29-38 with a 4.33 ERA over 108 games in five major league seasons, including 83 starts.

Musgrove is the third starting pitcher acquired by the Padres during the off-season. San Diego last month acquired left-hander Blake Snell and right-hander Yu Darvish in separate cards with the Tampa Bay Rays and Chicago Cubs, respectively.

This is the second major trade completed by the rebuilding Pirates, which first baseman Josh Bell traded to the Washington Nationals last month.
