If you had to choose: would you choose a sharper screen on your smartphone, or a smoother roll? This year, mobile phone buyers are asking themselves the question: the OnePlus Nord N100, Moto G50 and the new Samsung Galaxy F12 and M12 refresh their screens 90 times per second (which is good!) But with a lower-than-optimal screen resolution of 720p . It’s the same resolution as a 2011 Galaxy Nexus.
Compared to your average iPhone, this is a meager number of pixels. Since the iPhone 4 launched in 2010, each Apple device has offered at least 326 pixels per inch (PPI), enough so that you can not make out the individual pixels with the naked eye at typical viewing distance. (The marketing term is ‘retina display’.) Here, the PPI would be over 270.
And yet Apple has never offered an iPhone with a high refresh rate, which we often found one of the most popular features on smartphones and mid-range smartphones, because it makes everything you do (not just games) feel great gladder. (Apple may make this happen later this year.)
But the Galaxy F12 and M12, the OnePlus and Moto all show that high refresh does not have to be an excellent feature at all, or even a $ 300 as we saw recently with the OnePlus Nord N10 5G. Samsung phones in particular cost less than $ 150 each, as long as you are willing to sacrifice pixels to get there.
In other ways, it looks like the 9,999-rupee devices may also be decent choices: it’s based on the same basic platform as the Galaxy A12 and its four-camera range, but with a larger 6,000 mAh battery that dwarfs many others . the market. You get a fingerprint sensor on the side. Note that while its 8nm Exynos 850 processor may sound shiny and new, it is not comparable to Qualcomm’s recent Snapdragon chips from the 800 series. It’s closer to Snapdragon 665 of 2019 in performance.
It is not clear if any of these phones will still come to the US. The OnePlus Nord N100 already has, and the G50 was launched in Europe late last month.
