It’s not new for Apple to put out new technologies for a few generations to wait and see how the rest of the market experiments and gets things wrong and then comes in later with a solution to the problems.
Next, it will probably be the fingerprint scanner on the screen. The first phone to feature the technology was the Vivo X20 Plus UD which was introduced in early 2018, and by the end of 2021 I think we will see Apple incorporate the technology into the iPhone 13.
There have been a variety of fingerprint scanner technology implementations over nearly four years, and now the iPhone’s biggest competitor – the Samsung Galaxy S21 series – has proven that the technology is ready for mainstream.
A long time to come
The Samsung Galaxy S21 series contains strengths and weaknesses, but it undoubtedly offers the best on-screen fingerprint sensor we have ever seen on a Samsung phone.
In my opinion, this is the best on-screen fingerprint scanner I have used on any smartphone. A number of manufacturers, including OnePlus, Oppo, Xiaomi, and many more have struggled with the technology, and some have so far often included better-implemented technology than Samsung.
Samsung has made great progress in 2021 making it a much better option. Well, Qualcomm has technically had a big hand in the newer technology, but Samsung’s new phones are the first time we’re seeing it available on a smartphone.
I have never encountered a fingerprint scanner on the screen which meant I would stop using the phone, but until now the technology has always been noticeably weaker than physical fingerprint scanners.
We have become accustomed to power sensors on the bottom half of our smartphones over the past decade, and the switch to on-screen technology has not been without its ups and downs.
So why do I think this is the right time for Apple to step in and include the first Touch ID fingerprint scanner you will find embedded below the screen?
Samsung’s latest range of phones has a 70% larger sensor than the one we saw in 2020’s Galaxy S20, and it’s especially easier to use. This means you do not have to be so specific with your finger, as many of the lower half of the phone screen has a scanner underneath.
This is a relatively small adjustment, but it makes the technology much more useful than what we have experienced in the past. It’s also noticeably faster, which means you won’t have to wait for the phone to unlock like we did with previous iterations.
A bad year for Face ID
I’m sure Apple has been considering displaying it among fingerprint scanners for a while now, but the Covid-19 pandemic may also have exacerbated the need to return to a fingerprint sensor.
For the past twelve months, Face ID – Apple’s success story from a transition from fingerprint scanners to face recognition software built into the selfie camera – has begun to struggle as we tie face masks and hide our identities from our phones in an effort to spread the word. Covid-19.
In a new report this week, it is suggested that Apple is watching Touch ID to go under the screen for the first time in whatever its next smartphone range calls, and although I would prefer Apple to include this technology in its 2020 iPhone 12 series, the Galaxy, would include. S21 proves that the technology is now good enough for the masses.
I hope by the next time the next iPhone starts – we expect September 2021, but it may come later in the year – we do not have to wear face masks as often, but introduce a new technology that allows us to use a fingerprint to unlock our phone, we offer another option to quickly verify our identities along with Face ID.
We may see only one Apple device incorporating the new technology when it debuts later this year – often keeping Apple’s most innovative technology for one model – but I think Samsung’s success is a clear sign of where the iPhone is headed. pad is.
