Samsung has announced that customers will soon be able to search for unknown Galaxy SmartTags trackers using Samsung’s SmartThings Find service. The feature, called Unknown Tag Search, will appear next week on the SmartThings app.
Users will be able to search the nearby area for any SmartTags that do not belong to them but that move with them. This feature can be a big win for safety, providing an easy way to make sure no one is tracking you down with a small SmartTag that they carry in your backpack, wallet, coat pocket, etc. Did not slip. This is a great feature if you are concerned about the privacy or security implications of malicious detection devices.
Samsung has also announced that its assistant, Bixby, will get the ability to find SmartTags. If you placed a SmartTag on a certain item and named it, you can use Bixby to find the tag. For example, if you have a SmartTag on your keys, you could say “hello Bixby, where are my keys?” and it will offset the bubble of the label.
Apple currently has a feature similar to Unknown Tag Search in the iOS 14.5 beta, and it seems like it’s a natural fit for the company’s well-known AirTags article trackers. The company is offering its “Spring Loaded” event tomorrow, so maybe we’ll see Apple officially launch its rumored competitor to Samsung’s Galaxy SmartTags.
