Neo QLED: Samsung TVs Use Mini LEDs for Lighting

As part of the “First Look” leading up to CES 2021, Samsung has introduced new televisions under the name “Neo QLED”. The new QLED televisions use mini-LED backlighting to enable local dimming with subdivision into significantly more smaller zones.

Samsung Electronics today unveiled its 2021 portfolio of Neo QLED, MICRO LED and Lifestyle TV screens during its very first virtual First Look event ahead of CES 2021. Miniled can be found in Samsung’s new QLED TVs, featuring Samsung Neo QLED issue. There are two top models that offer resolutions of 4K and 8K. Information on the formats, prices and release dates is not yet known.

With miniled, very small LED lights are placed behind the pixels on the screen to illuminate the image. According to Samsung, these are lights that are 40 times smaller than regular LEDs. An advantage of miniled is, in addition to higher contrast and higher brightness, that there is virtually no chance of burn-in, which can happen with OLED TVs over time

Samsung has also introduced some new features of the Neo QLED TVs. The most striking is a ‘Super Ultrawide GameView’ with which the image of computer games can be widened to an aspect ratio of 32 by 9. Black bars will appear below and above the game screen.

Over the next few years, Samsung will make a journey of “Going green” to align TV business operations with the following long-term sustainability programs:

  • Reducing carbon footprint and Improving energy efficiency: Samsung will try to systematically reduce its total carbon footprint in TV manufacturing. The company will also try to reduce consumers’ power consumption and use more recycled materials across its entire TV line.
  • Sustainable packaging design: Based on valuable consumer feedback, Samsung expands its award-winning ‘Eco-packaging’ designed for all 2021 Lifestyle TVs and most of the 2021 Neo QLED line. This sustainable solution can load up to 200,000 tons of zinc boxes each year.1 By minimizing text and graphic images on the Eco packaging, the oil-based ink of color printing traditionally used on TV boxes is eliminated, further reducing waste.
  • Solar Cell Remote Control: In 2021, Samsung TVs will provide solar-powered remote control that can be charged by indoor lighting, outdoor lighting or USB – a first-class innovation for the brand. This will help avoid waste of 99 million AAA batteries over seven years.2 To design the remote control, Samsung has innovated the manufacturing process using plastic from recyclable bottles, including 24% recycled contents.3

Samsung’s 2021 accessibility features – now available on all 2021 QLED and Neo QLED models – offer the latest advances in technology and artificial intelligence (AI) to help more people comfortably enjoy their TV experience. The 2021 line adds new features such as Caption moves, Sign Language Zoom and Multi-output audio, which gives those with hearing impairments, deaf people, visually impaired and the blind the ability to optimize their view of their needs and preferences. By 2022, Samsung is committed to expanding it Voice guide function – which provides audio guidance for people with deafness and people with poor eyesight. And Samsung will continue to develop new AI-based features in the coming years to improve the accessibility of Samsung TVs.

Neo QLED Takes a Quantum Leap in TV Display Technology

Samsung introduces brand new display technology, Neo QLED, to his flagship 8K (QN900A) and 4K (QN90A) models. Samsung takes QLED to the next level, powered by new light source, Quantum Mini LED precisely controlled by Quantum Matrix Technology and Neo-quantum processor, a powerful image processor optimized for Neo QLED.

Samsung designs the Quantum Mini LED 1/40 the height of a conventional LED. Instead of using a lens to scatter light, and a package to put the LED in place, the Quantum Mini LED has incredibly thin micro-layers filled with many more LEDs. Quantum Matrix Technology enables ultra-fine and precise control of the tightly packed LEDs to prevent blooming – and allows viewers to enjoy content as it is meant to be seen. Neo QLED increases the luminance scale to 12-bit by 4096 steps; it helps to darken dark areas and brighten bright areas, resulting in a more accurate and immersive HDR experience. And Neo QLED benefits from Samsung’s own, powerful Neo-quantum processor with improved scalability. Using up to 16 different neural network models, each trained in AI scaling and deep learning technology, the Neo Quantum Processor can optimize image quality to 4K and 8K image outputs, regardless of input quality.

Samsung’s 2021 Neo QLED 8K includes a new Infinity One design—An almost ringless screen that provides an even more immersive viewing experience in a sleek design and form factor. And Neo QLED 8K’s attachable Slim One Connect the box– a brand new cable management system that can be connected to the back of the TV – ensures easy installation and cleaner aesthetics. The 2021 Neo QLED 8K also features several premium audio features that fill the room; Object Tracking Sound (OTS) Pro‘s dynamic sound corresponds to the movement of objects on the screen, and SpaceFit Sound analyze the physical environment of the installed TV and perform captivating sounds that are specific to your space.

Samsung’s 2021 Neo QLED 8K and 4K models offer smart features that expand the role of the TV and help consumers meet their changing needs in terms of fitness, entertainment and the home office.

  • Samsung Health transforms the house seamlessly into a personal gym, and the new Smart trainer contains tracks and analyzes posture in real time, just like a personal trainer. The opening of a new era of breathtaking image quality and design with MICRO LED

In 2021, the promise of Micro LED comes home. With the new MICRO LED Samsung introduced Micro LEDs for the first time in a traditional TV form factor – offering consumers a breathtaking visual experience on an ultra-large next-generation screen.

Available in 110 ”, 99 ”, and smaller sizes by the end of the year, use the new MICRO LED series of LED lights in micrometers to eliminate the backlight and color filters used in conventional screens. It is self-illuminating, delivering incredible lifelike colors and brightness through its 24 million individually controlled LEDs. And with a Monolith design defined by more than 99% screen-to-body ratio, you will only see the breathtaking image quality.

Samsung has renewed its Smart TV features to take advantage of the massive screen of the new MICRO LED line. Consumers can, for example, 4Vue(Quad View) function to comfortably view four different content sources simultaneously on one screen.
