Samsung SmartThings is now available on Android Auto [Update]

After Samsung announced that a partnership with Google will bring Nest devices to SmartThings this year, Samsung is about to integrate with one of Google’s platforms. In addition to the announcement of the Galaxy S21 series, Samsung has revealed that SmartThings is coming to Android Auto.

The SmartThings app for Android will soon provide support for Android Auto. Samsung has not confirmed exactly when this feature will be coming, saying that the Galaxy S21 can perform the feature.

Samsung explains that users will be able to “turn on your sidewalk lights or even raise the temperature of your thermostat before you get home, all from your car.”

The user interface seen shows an app on Android Auto with a variety of automations such as ‘Come Home’ and ‘Go Out’. This allows you to quickly tap to perform actions, such as turning lights on / off, opening or closing a garage door, or adjusting other appliances. There is also a “places” button on the interface, but we can not be sure what it specifically does yet. It’s also unclear if this SmartThings app will include any integration with Google Assistant on Android Auto.

Update 1/18: Samsung’s latest SmartThings update provides support for Android Auto. As noted by Joe Kester on Twitter, the update adds an Android Auto section to the app on your phone where you can customize which six tiles appear in the Android Auto UI.

The latest SmartThings update is now available in the Play Store and also adds support for the Galaxy SmartTag.
