As the launch date on January 14 for the Samsung Galaxy S21 draws ever closer, we are still getting information from what we can expect – and it sounds as if the S-Series will abandon the expandable storage option this year.
Famous tipster Roland Quandt indicated on Twitter that none of the S21 models will have a memory card reader, although all S20 phones have given users the option to insert a card to increase storage capacity.
Expandable storage support is something Samsung has gone back and forth over the years, but it seems like the time is now over. As built-in storage capacity increases, and cloud streaming services are the norm, the idea may be that local storage is no longer as important as it used to be.

Yet it is a feature that many smartphone buyers are looking for, even if it is not offered by the Apple iPhone and Google Pixel devices. The feature can serve as a safety net if you want to reach the limit of the storage space on your smartphone.
About the composite charger …
The saga of the composite smartphone charger also took another turn, and Quandt also said that ‘some markets can still get a charger [for the S21] in the box, while others do not.
You may recall that Apple is starting the trend of making smartphone chargers optional extras, which have benefits for both the environment and profit margins – which has attracted a bit of ridicule from some of its competitors.
Now it looks like the competitors are following suit, with Xiaomi and Samsung among those who will abandon the composite charger in 2021. If Quandt is right, certain markets can still get a Samsung Galaxy S21 charger in the box.
Most sources point to a January 14 unveiling for the Galaxy S21, and even the invitation for the event has now been leaked. If expandable storage support drops, make sure you buy a model that has all the required capacity.
