Samsung Galaxy A52 and A72 leaks indicate high refresh rate screens

Samsung may be getting closer to refreshing two popular mid-range devices: the Galaxy A52 and A72. Leaked press releases and prices have surfaced over the past month, and now, SamMobile reported that the phones will get a higher refresh screen. This is a welcome feature that comes with much more expensive flagship devices; faster refresh rates make for a much smoother experience, with smoother animations and scrolling than the typical 60Hz screen offers.

The A52 and A72 are expected to be sold in LTE and 5G versions; the LTE phones will reportedly have 90Hz screens, while the 5G versions will get 120Hz panels. (SamMobile only indicates that the A52 5G will have the 120Hz screen, but it seems likely that the A72 5G would be too.) A 90Hz panel is not unheard of in the A52 budget / lower middle class – the $ 300 OnePlus Nord N10 5G is equipped with one – but it is still unusual.

SamMobile also reports a few more specs for the A52 5G: it will include a Snapdragon 750G chipset, 6.5-inch OLED screen and a 4500 mAh battery with 25W fast charger. It is also expected to be available with Android 11. Several with 6 GB RAM / 128 GB storage and 8 GB RAM / 256 GB storage are likely to be offered.

At the front of the camera, it will reportedly include a 64-megapixel main sensor with a 12-megapixel ultra-wide, 5-megapixel macro and a 5-megapixel depth sensor camera. It is also reported that it includes a 32 megapixel selfie camera. It is expected to cost around € 450 (almost $ 550), while the non-5G model could cost $ 400.

The Galaxy A51 was one of the top-selling phones worldwide in the first half of 2020, and Samsung would like to build on its success with attractive features such as the screen with a higher refresh rate. We liked the A51 screen’s high quality and good build quality, but the processor is a bit slow loading of apps – something Samsung wants to fix in this follow-up.

The A51’s 4000 mAh battery performance was similar. A screen with a higher refresh rate is likely to require even more power, which is possibly why this year will reportedly offer a larger battery. However, capacity is only part of the equation, so this is something we will be watching when this device finally makes its official debut.
