Apple, Facebook and Microsoft – Google’s plan is not yet clear – are all working on portable content for supplements. Samsung’s work on AR may have leaked today, but there are many unknowns about ‘Glasses Lite’.
WalkingCat, a Twitter account with a well-known history of leaking Microsoft and Samsung products, posted two videos over the weekend. Given the source’s record – mostly the revelation of the Galaxy Tab S7 Lite and Galaxy Chromebook 2, it’s most likely a real Samsung video. The important caveat, however, is that it can only be an internal concept rather than an actual upcoming product. WalkingCat is not sure of themselves and tweeted with a “R&D vision concept?“Caption.
The first video starts with a title card that says “Samsung Glasses Lite” and is very much the style for the company’s product videos. We see the glasses much thicker than ordinary eye frames, but immediately familiar. The last shot in this series is of lenses that clearly contain a transparent screen.
We then see how the actual product is worn and used, with a simulation of what the person sees through Glasses Lite. The first use case is playing a car game on a Samsung phone connected to a controller accessory.
It also shows an example of ‘Integrated Control’ where a Galaxy Watch is used to watch ‘Video’ from game. It’s launching seamlessly on the Glasses Lite, with Samsung calling it ‘portable media’. The person then switches to “Dex Display” and responds to an email with a physical keyboard while a floating desktop appears in front of them. A “video call” scenario is also shown.
This person then walks outside and activates “Sunglasses Mode” to hide the AR screens and color the shades. While in public, this model continues to control a drone as part of a “New Dimension Display” feature with flight HUD.
It’s not clear what screen technology Samsung uses, but here’s realistic details – such as how the AR screen is almost square and that the top edge of the lenses are obscured to hide technical components – which increases the likelihood that it’s more developed product and not purely a concept.
The second video is from Samsung’s “Next Wearable Computing” vision. The conceptual nature of this is very clear and includes:
- AR Office: Complete with a projected keyboard that only the user can see and use to type. They can zoom in, with an unlimited field-of-view, unlike the first video.
- Holo Call: With virtual guests for the whole body
- AR simulation: chamber-scale immersion
This video ends on ‘Samsung AR Glasses’.
