While the world is still waiting for an update on Drew Brees, the Saints have taken an important step regarding the veteran’s contract.
New Orleans ‘Tom Pelissero reportedly reported on Friday that Brees’ contract to keep his base salary to a minimum in 2021. The club can now keep him in the rankings on June 1, while drastically reducing his 2021 cap line.

Pelissero noted that the Saints will now charge $ 12 million for Brees, rather than the $ 36 million plus it would initially cost the team. An additional $ 11.5 million will hit the cap in 2022, he added.
The move frees up about $ 24 million for the Saints, which will be crucial in an off-season where many teams will be capped.
The 41-year-old has been expected to announce his retirement for months. In the meantime, Brees, who is no stranger to restructuring his contract to the benefit of his team, has made sure the Saints get another solid stretch by spreading the impact of the cap if he decides to end it.
